American Thanksgiving Cupcakes – Pilgrims, Pumpkins and Poultry!

Now, I this is an interesting post for me to do as I am not American, therefore I have never celebrated Thanksgiving. However, given how much I love Christmas dinner, I do feel like I’m missing out! As if you’re not getting enough food on the day, take a look to see if you fancy recreating any of these cupcake decorating ideas.

First we have these cute cupcakes turned into turkeys using candy corn (which I have also never had!). They are by Cakemuffingirl on Flickr

Then we have these beautiful little pumpkin topped frosting spirals upon cupcakes. The pumpkin looks like it is made of sugarpaste with a green swirl of royal icing from a piping bag. You could use a Jaffa (Cadburys chocolate) for the pumpkin if they are available in your country. By apuch on Flickr

USA Memorial Day / American Independence Day Cupcakes

This is a bit of a bumper post as I try to cover two American events with the same cupcake decorating ideas; Memorial Day (previously known as Decoration Day) and the fourth of July, Independence Day. Both of these days are traditionally celebrated with the US colours of red, white and blue – which is evident in these cupcakes:

Cookies and Cups created these M&M topped cupcakes as part of their patriotic range. If you look carefully you’ll see that not only is the buttercream frosting a swirl of white and red, but the sponge is too. You could also alternate the red with blue and top with red M&Ms

Lizespo on Flickr has also gone for a multi-colours swirl, but with all three colours and little American flags for each one.

Here is a beautifully simple design from Martha Stewart she has also given instructions as to how to make these yourself.

I’m surprised that I have not seen this technique for  fireworks before, it’s so simple and effective. These cupcakes are by GinaMig on Flickr

The beauty of July is that some wonderful red and blue fruits are in season, and they can be used perfectly for this theme (and taste great too). This cake from Getty Images makes perfect use of a single strawberry.

These cakes from Annie’s Eats make great use of the fruits in season, I was also surprised to find there are in fact Ice Cream cupcakes, click on the link for full instructions of how to make them.

If you look at the wider picture, your cupcakes don’t have to be red white and blue each, they can decorated as a collection:  Blisstree features this strawberry topped flag.

jcasbill on Cake Central made this perfect collection, and even laid them out like a flag blowing in the wind.

St George’s Day Cupcakes – Dragon Fighting Patron Saint of England

This year (2011) St George’s Day falls on the day before Easter Sunday. Two great reasons to have a cupcake filled weekend! Luckily for you, the England flag is nice and simple, so lets start with a couple of designs you should be able to try at home quite easily;

Here are some beautiful homemade cupcakes, fitting as many flags possible onto one single cupcake. There come from Cupcake Recipe

Another way to do that flag which has a more simplistic look, but a little bit more tricky to make it look perfect is this idea from jembogawa on flickr

Another symbol of England is the red English Rose. You can buy pre-made roses from some supermarkets and most cake decorating shops. Adding one to a buttercream mountain is simple but effective, like this one from Great Belfast Food

It is possible to make the roses by hand with sugrpaste and a simple leaf stamp can make some realistic rose leaves. Cupcake Woman made this one to celebrate England playing in the football world cup.

5626592395 3d6cf7b220 St George’s Day Cupcakes – Dragon Fighting Patron Saint of England

The most famous story of St George was that he slayed a dragon, and with that – why not make your own dragon cupcakes with a mixture of whatever sweets and toys you can get your hands on. An example of this is here on The Cupcake Blog. You’ll notice that this is made out of two cupcakes joined together.

If you feel more comfortable with sugarpaste, try this curled up dragon (or buy it pre-made from this etsy page

Royal Wedding, British Cupcakes for Prince William and Kate Middleton – Or the Queens Jubilee!

So, on 29th April 2011 Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting married. Those in the UK are getting a day off work to celebrate, and what do we do at Cupcake Decorating Ideas when we want to celebrate something? Yes, we come up with Cupcake Ideas for it so you can make your own at home.

We are basically looking at union jack colours and royal symbols. So as always, let start with the more simple ideas out there that you can try. These cakes could also be made for the Queens Jubilee comming up in 2012.

First of are these quirky cupcake from Tesco Real Food I love the strong deep colours of the icing. It just goes to show you don’t need fancy icing equipment have fancy icing. Tesco have also included a recipe for the cupcakes and instructions for making the crowns.

If you have a steady hand you can try piping little union jacks, like on these cupcakes as shown on English Wedding

These cakes from Completely Cakes are cute. If you don’t have time to order in edible picture decorations you could try just printing pictures out on paper and sticking them to the tops of toothpicks as decorative flags to be removed before eating.

5602991534 a8fe3c6ca2 Royal Wedding, British Cupcakes for Prince William and Kate Middleton Or the Queens Jubilee!

If however you do have time to order some edible photos, why not try placing them on buttercream frosting in Union Jack colours? I do not know who made these cupcakes, so if you know, please tell me so I can credit them.

No British street party can be complete without bunting, why not try these hand painted bunting flags stringed together with strawberry lace, courtesy of Cupcake Revolution.

5602407475 185749d853 Royal Wedding, British Cupcakes for Prince William and Kate Middleton Or the Queens Jubilee!

As we get into more complicated designs, we move onto royal purple, which I love with gold. These crowns are perfect for the royal wedding and the little cameo ‘W+K’ in the background are a special touch. These cupcakes are by Rachael Walker and shown on Good To Know.

5602991588 299f2d9995 Royal Wedding, British Cupcakes for Prince William and Kate Middleton Or the Queens Jubilee!

These cakes are as if the royal butler made them himself, pure perfection, not a touch out of place. Made by Donna Makes Cakes.

5602406949 d4909b16f4 Royal Wedding, British Cupcakes for Prince William and Kate Middleton Or the Queens Jubilee!

If you are making these cakes for the Queens Jubilee you can easily change some of the elements to be more fitting to the situation.

Finally, less focus on the ‘Royal’ and more on the ‘Wedding’, look at this elegant design by. You could always use a photo of Kate Middleton in place for the head. Once again, I cannot find who made these, so please let me know if they’re yours.

Getting Ready For St Patrick’s Day

As we are moving towards St Patricks Day (March 17th), lets take a look at some of the ideas out there that you can try yourselves at home:

This cupcake is simple but beautiful to look at, however all the real effort has gone into the ingredients rather than the design. The sponge is made with Guinness Stout, and the frosting is made with Baileys. I have already decided to try this one out myself this weekend.

For a full review of this cake, and more great photos, read Chris Blakeley’s Flikr entry here

If you are confident with making the basic sponge, and the basic buttercream, but not much else (or just don’t have too much time spare) why not try this effective idea by Martha Stewart:

Now on the complete other end of the scale, check out these designs by Sweetie Pie’s Boutique Bakery (n.b if you want to try doing these for yourself, you might want to get started now to have them done by the 17th!)
